Climate in Chile

The  climate in Chile  is clearly  shaped by the  different climatic zones . Due to Chile’s extraordinary length, the climate changes from very little precipitation in the north to the rain-rich south. The seasons are opposite to those in Europe as Chile is in the southern hemisphere. In general, January and February are considered the warmest months in Chile. On the other hand, it gets coldest in July.

The landscape in Chile is just as varied as the climate. The north of Chile can be visited all year round. The climate is particularly characterized by drought,  precipitation is extremely rare . The Atacama Desert to the north is considered  the driest place in the world . The daytime temperatures are usually pleasantly mild in the north, but the temperature can drop sharply at night. With up to 26 degrees, the months of January and February are the warmest. In February I can also  look forward to  nine hours of sunshine a day. In August the thermometer does not rise above 18 degrees Celsius, the average minimum temperature is 13 degrees Celsius. The sun shines an average of four hours a day in the winter months from June to August.

In  central Chile , including Chile’s capital Santiago counts, there is a  Mediterranean climate . Summers are dry and warm. In winter there are more rainy days, but this time of year is also relatively mild. The months of May to August are considered the  rainy season  in central Chile . In January and February it gets warmest in central Chile with an average maximum temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. The summer is generally very low in precipitation. The months of November, March and April have only one rainy day per month. Rain rarely falls between December and March. The South American summer is the perfect travel time for a trip to central Chile. With  up to ten hours of sunshine in December and January this is the perfect place to escape the winter.

The climate in the south is  cooler and has more rainfall  than the rest of Chile. January and February are  the warmest months in the south of Chile with a  maximum temperature of 23 degrees . Often, however, the thermometer does not rise above 16 degrees even in summer if you are in the deep south of the country. With eight hours of sunshine, the sun shines the longest in January and February. The darkest months are June and July with two hours of sunshine per day. The winter is characterized by high rainfall, in June you have to expect 21 rainy days. A true paradise for outdoor enthusiasts  and hikers awaits in the south of Chile  . Numerous national parks such as the  Torres del Paine make the hearts of adventurers beat faster. The summer months are definitely recommended for a trip to the south of Chile. Winter is often rough, wet and very cold, especially in the deep south. In addition, many excursions do not take place under the winter temperatures.
